About the Recipe

It is surprisingly difficult to find an apple crumble recipe that doesn't have ingredients that I don't particularly like or respond well to. Some are too sweet or don't really have much flavour. I am glad to say that with a few minor alterations to a few different recipes, here is the result!

A tried and tested recipe with friends and family guaranteed to round off any meal with a bang!

Ingredients

Apple Sauce:

  • 3 medium apples (I recommend braeburn apples or gala apples if you prefer something sweeter)

  • 2.5 tablespoons caster sugar (or granulated sugar)

  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp cinammon powder

  • 1/4 tsp fresh lemon juice

Crumble:

  • 38g cold unsalted butter

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup caster sugar

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp baking powder

  • Sprinkle of salt

Equipment

  • 1 small baking dish

  • 1 large bowl

  • 1 medium bowl

  • Fruit knife/peeler (whichever you prefer to remove the skin from the apple)

Preparation

Step 1
Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Step 2
Peel the skin from the apples and remove the cores. Slice the apples into thin even strips and place in a large bowl.
For those who have never cut or peeled an apple before, you may want to use a peeler instead of a fruit knife. When removing the cores however, you will need to switch to a fruit knife. I like to cut my apples into quarters before removing a small part of the ends and cutting off the middle part of the apple.

Step 3
Add the rest of the apple sauce ingredients into the large bowl with the apples. Mix everything together carefully (so as not to break up or damage the apples) with a fork.
Note: you may add 1/2 tsbp more caster sugar if you prefer your apple crumble to be very sweet.

Step 4
Add all the crumble ingredients together in a medium bowl. Add the butter last. Mash all the ingredients together with your fingers. You should eventually get a crumbly texture.
Tip: keep the butter in the fridge until the last moment! Add it once you have measured and added all your other ingredients into the bowl.
Note: you may have large chunks of butter. Make sure to try and minimise those clumps and get them to be as small as you can get them. However, if you have a few large clumps that is fine.

Step 5
Lay the apple slices side-by-side in the baking dish so that they are slightly overlapping one another. Then sprinkle the crumble on top.

Step 6
Place in the oven for 40 minutes. Try to refrain from opening the oven door. The crumble should be golden brown on top.
Tip: turn the oven off and keep the crumble in the oven for another 2 minutes. The apples will just melt in your mouth!

Step 7
Let cool for at least 5 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

Meal Prep Factor

Can I keep...
1) the unbaked apple crumble overnight?
YES! You can but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're meal prepping for the next day. You're almost there anyway! Make sure you keep it in the fridge. I would definitely recommend keeping the apples and the crumble separate and assemble when you have time to bake. This is so that the apple sauce doesn't seep into the crumble overnight.
2) the baked apple crumble overnight?
YES! You may keep the baked apple crumble in a container for 2-3 days in the fridge. To reheat, either place in the microwave or if you want to be extra, you can rebake it for about 3-5 minutes at 180ºC in the oven. If you live in a colder climate, you can keep your apple crumble in a container outside of the fridge but for no longer than 24 hours (to be safe)!

How I Like It

My favourite foods to serve with apple crumble:
1) Vanilla ice cream
2) Some people like custard? I have never tried.
